It is very important to always make sure all files and databases stored on a dedicated server are backed up regularly. Having backups insures that in the event of a worst case scenario, disaster recovery will be as complete and efficient as possible. If your dedicated server uses cPanel, it is easy to make backups of complete websites.
To make a backup of a website using cPanel, first login using your user name and password, and then follow the below steps:
- On the main page, there will be a list of icons - select the one for 'Backup'. As the icon setup can vary based on cPanel layouts, if the 'Backup' icon is not present on the main page look for an icon for 'Tools'. The 'Tools' button may lead you to another page that shows the 'Backup' option.
- Once the Backup button is selected and you are taken to the next page, select the option text link for "Generate/Download a Full Backup."
- You will then need to fill out the backup options for where to save the files, and the email address you would like to use for the backup complete notification. By default, the files are saved in the home directory for the website. You can also choose to have the backups sent directly to another server by FTP.
- Click the 'Generate Backup' button, and allow time for the process to finish. Once complete, the file will be saved compressed as a tar.gz file. You should then move the backup file to another safe location, such as a local drive, for storage using FTP.
This process should be done often to to make sure all of your website data is complete in the backup should it be necessary to use the files to recover in case of a disaster.
